So I have gone through the process of researching and putting together a comprehensive guide to each of these emergency hand crank flashlights and radios. We all have owned one or know someone who does so these are not new. What is new is the technology and features that each one of these emergency crank flashlights offers. We try to take some of the confusion out of the process and allow you more time to focus on your other emergency preparedness needs.
The Best Emergency [Hand Crank Flashlight Tips]
[TIP #1] Understand what kind of emergency you think you are most likely to experience. I am in Florida, so the most likely emergency I will see is a hurricane. So my hand crank flashlight has a built-in radio and solar panels. Understanding what type of emergency you will face will greatly help you decide on what features you want.
[TIP #2] Decide on the features that you think are going to serve your needs best. There are a lot of different features in the hand crank flashlights that are on the market these days. You should try and find the perfect balance between budget and features that you want to be included.
[TIP #3] Do the research. Once you decide your budget and features that you want. You are able to shop for the perfect hand cranked flashlight that meets your needs. It is always easier to shop or find the perfect piece of emergency gear when you know what you are looking for.
[TIP#4] Be prepared. No matter whether you find the perfect hand crank flashlight on this page or on another site. Make sure you purchase this piece of essential emergency gear before the emergency happens. By then it is too late. That is when everybody runs to the local hardware store and try to buy all their emergency gear up. You don't want to need a piece of essential gear when the store shelves are empty.
[TIP#5] Test your equipment! Not testing your gear regularly is one of the biggest and most common mistake people make when preparing for an emergency situation. Fire up that natural gas generator up sometimes. In most cases, we are buying emergency flashlights with that old saying we all know. Hope for the best and plan for the worst. So while you are making the smart choices buy being prepared. In the back of our mind, we are hopeful that we do not need it. With this mindset we tend to leave the emergency gear tucked away in our bug out bag or emergency kit. Then we haven't checked it in a few years and when you need it most, it is not working for whatever reason. Don't let that happen and check your emergency gear at least every 6months.

Emergency Hand Crank Flashlight Options
Cell Phone Chargers- Over the last decade cell phones have become an essential communication tool. These are the primary way for us to talk to and get ahold of our family. In an emergency situation, the first and most important step you take is to find out if your family is ok and where are they. If you are like me then most of the day my phone is close to shutting down because it's low on power.
In a worst-case scenario, the last thing that can happen is for your cell phone to die when you need it most. On a less grim note, if it is not a complete state of emergency and maybe the power is just out for a day or 2. Then you are gonna need your phone to play games and pass the time away. Your phone will probably be the only thing that will get internet. Don't let that happen and make sure that you have a way to charge your cell phone at all times and under any circumstance.
Solar power- We are focused on the hand crank flashlight on this page. But I would be misleading you if I did not include the option of solar panel power for your emergency flashlight. With solar power technology becoming so much more efficient than they use to be. They are able to generate a lot more power in a much smaller space than even just a few years ago. Solar power is one of the best power sources to use whenever possible. But as abundant as the sunshine is there are always times that you could go without the opportunity to charge your emergency flashlight. So as great as the solar-powered emergency flashlight do not forget to make sure you also have the option to hand crank so you can charge your flashlight when all else fails.
Built-In Radio- In a true sustained emergency, one of the most important things you will need to do is stay informed. It is essential that you know where to go and what to do in an emergency. The best way to do this is to use the system that is set up for emergencies with a radio. The radio is where the authorities will be directing the public. They will be informing us of crucial information like where the proper shelters are or exactly what kind of emergency is coming your way. When all power is lost you will not be able to watch the tv. Or if the cell phone towers go down for some reason or overloaded from everybody trying to make calls at once. So the radio is the perfect communication tool that you need to stay informed.
Water Proof- If you are on the coast or in any kind of flood zone. You should probably consider the waterproof options that are available in the emergency flashlight genre. The hand-crank flashlight that I own is waterproof because I live on the west coast of Florida. The most likely emergency I will see is a Hurricane. With the recent hurricanes Irma and Maria come through Florida I felt like I should waterproof as much of my emergency gear that I can. This option is a good example that you want to have an idea of what emergency you will experience and your location. With me on the coast of Florida (my location) and I will most likely see a Hurricane(my most likely emergency). I am able to know that I want my gear to be waterproofed.
Reliability- You can have all the gadgets you want on the emergency hand crank flashlight. But if it is a low quality or cheap product and breaks on the first use then it is all for nothing. If you're like me and the budget was a major factor in my decision when I purchased my emergency crank flashlight. I decided to go with a higher quality piece of gear but I gave up a few options that I would have liked to have. But I want my gear to work in real-world situations and the cheap ones just flat do not perform as expected in your most important time of need.

RunningSnail Emergency Crank Flashlight - [Amazon #1 Seller]
Ths is the [Upgraded Version]RunningSnail Emergency Hand Crank Self Powered AM/FM NOAA Solar Weather Radio with LED Flashlight, 1000mAh Power Bank for iPhone/Smart Phone from Amazon.
This particular emergency crank flashlight has everything you are looking for in a little package. That is why I own more than a few of these emergency flashlights. This is one of those emergency tools that is in all of my bugout bags and emergency kits. It is very useful in a bunch of different ways with still being so small and lightweight that it can fit in any bag or kit that you have.
This crank flashlight has a solar panel on the top of it so when available you can set your emergency flashlight out to recharge during the day. A major upgrade is the fact that you can charge your phone with this emergency flashlight. It is a 1000mah charger with 3 charge options that utilize the solar panels as the primary source of power. It actually works very well for charging my cell phone and other items I have during the day and with full sun.
A great feature that this emergency flashlight uses the latest LED technology as its light source. So not only is this crank flashlight very bright it uses very little power. So you get the best of both worlds there. If you less power throughout the night then you should have less battery to charge during the day. And this could be the difference a lot of times when I'm out I the woods camping. I do not own any kind of flashlight that is not LED.
It has a built-in AM/FM radio with a fold out antenna that works very well and uses very little power. Remember, you will need a radio in an emergency. It is always a good thing when you can combine a few emergency needs into 1 item. This radio uses very little power because it is not digital and uses the old school dial and antenna for its signal. And for emergency gear, using very little power is pretty important in the grand scheme of things.
Bottom Line for this Emergency Crank Flashlight
I really like it. It has everything I need in a very compact package. Plus it meets my budget requirements since I bought these in bulk. So if you are building an emergency preparedness kit or bugout bag then I highly recommend this crank flashlight. Emergency Hand Crank Flashlight #2
Midland ER310 Emergency Crank Flashlight
This is the is the Midland Consumer Radio ER310 Emergency Solar Hand Crank AM/FM Digital Weather Radio Flashlight. It is another great all-in-one emergency crank flashlight that is on the market. It has a lot of great features that I find to be very useful.
This Midland ER310 was created with real emergency situations in mind. It has all of the options that the first flashlight has but it is built a little tougher and provides more power. It is built by one of the most popular companies in adventure electronics industry Midland USA so you don't have to worry about the craftsmanship that goes into there gear. You are guaranteed a high-quality emergency crank flashlight with this Midland ER310. You can also use just some plain old AA batteries if you want to. I have always liked that about Midland gear. They have the user in mind when they build their products.
It has a much more powerful battery with a 2600 mAh Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery with USB Output for charging Portable Devices. Midland has always provided very high-quality batteries in their electronics. This battery utilizes the most recent advancements in Lithium Ion technology. So you get a very powerful 2600mah Lithium Ion battery to recharge multiple devices at once. And to provide the brighter light for longer periods of time.
It has a Solar Panel on the top to help recharge the battery. This is a very important function in your emergency gear because you have to look at the long term. Nobody wants to crank for hours every day and the high-efficiency solar panels do a great job of recharging this batter. Don't worry you still have the ability to hand crank the flashlight if all else fails.
It has emergency signaling options which I like a lot. This emergency flashlight can be used as an SOS beacon that flashes a Morse Code Distress Signal. With this feature and the very bright light, I fell like it could be very useful maybe even life-saving in certain situations.
Bottom Line for this Emergency Crank Flashlight
I love everything Midland has to offer and they did not let me down with this emergency crank flashlight. I know it is a bit more expensive than other emergency flashlights out there. But you really are getting a quality piece of survival gear. I was able to justify the higher price because I own only one of these but it is in my primary emergency kit. If you have room in your budget I would recommend this crank flashlight to you.
Emergency Hand Crank Flashlight #3
Kaito 5-Way Powered Emergency Crank Flashlight and Radio
This is the Kaito KA500BU 5-Way Powered Emergency AM/FM/SW Weather Alert Radio/Flashlight. As you can tell I prefer the all-in-one emergency crank flashlight. I feel that you get the most out of space and money when you go for the piece of gear that can do a lot of things for me. This is another great emergency crank flashlight that I own. It does not have the famous name like Midland USA but maybe that's why it is a little less expensive.
This crank flashlight has a set of solar panels on the top to help with recharging during the day. I personally would not purchase an emergency flashlight these days if it did not have solar panels on top. Once you have to spend the day cranking you will understand. As usual, this emergency flashlight has the ability to be hand cranked in the real emergency situations.
One of the main differences with this particular crank flashlight is that it has the option to be plugged in and charged with an optional AC adapter power pack. The power pack is not included but you are able to order it as an add-on. This is a very convenient feature since most emergencies last only 24-28 hours. If you keep this crank flashlight fully charged it will definitely last the day or 2 that you need.
It comes with 6 different cellphone tips that charge most models of phones out there. It also has a reading lamp on the side of it that also has the ability to turn red in emergency situations. Another unique feature of this crank flashlight is that it has a strap for holding while you are on the go. This is useful if you want to charge something but can not sit in the same spot all day. You are able to continue on your hiking trail and also charge your electronics at the same time.
Bottom Line for this Emergency Crank Flashlight
I like this little emergency crank flashlight. It handles all of the functions that I expect from this type of emergency gear very well. It has almost 200 reviews on Amazon with a 4.5-star rating so it is doing something right.
Emergency Hand Crank Flashlight #4
Eton FRX5 Emergency Crank Flashlight
This is the Eton FRX5 - All Purpose Weather Alert Radio with Bluetooth. Like all the other emergency crank flashlights on this page, it is an all-in-one piece of emergency gear. If you have made it this far down the page then you are familiar with my thought process. That is that anytime you can combine essential equipment, you should. This emergency crank flashlight does that very nicely.
Although it has a lot of the same features as some other crank flashlights on this page. It does have a few unique features that really make it stand out from the rest. One of those is that it has BlueTooth technology built in. I find this particularly useful because I am able to listen to my playlist on my phone through this crank flashlight. Music is always helpful on those long hikes. It keeps me motivated and sometimes I need that little extra push.
Another great feature is that it is IPX4 splashproof rated. It is not fully waterproof but until there is a waterproof all-in-one crank flashlight this is the best you are going to get for now. I like to camp around water most of the time. Whether it is saltwater or freshwater it is always good to have things as waterproof as possible. The most common time this feature would be used is when you are camping or hiking and it starts to rain. Which happens all the time for me when out on an adventure.
It is also drop-proof from a height of about 3 feet. I cant tell you how many times I dropped this crank flashlight and it survived. All I'm gonna say is I wish my cell phone was drop-proof for over 3 feet. I would have a lot more money in my bank account. And with 2 kids, this feature comes in handy a little more than it should.
Bottom Line for this Emergency Crank Flashlight
It is pricey but you get a lot of features that none of the other emergency crank flashlights have. You get a piece of emergency gear with BlueTooth at the same time being Splashproof and Drop-proof. So, in my opinion, it is worth the little extra money for the piece of mind that it will hold up to the daily wear and tear.
